THE LOVE OF COFFEE

Roasted. Brewed. Sipped. Stirred. Explored. Loved. Essential.

These are just a few of the words that describe the world’s second most traded commodity. Coffee is something that almost everyone can relate to in some form or another. From experiencing it on a first date to relying on it daily to get one through the morning grind.

This passion project surrounds exploration and explanation of this incredible plant. From a study of vector illustration to motion, I sought to create a glimpse of what goes into the world’s most popular caffeine addiction. Each image uses a unique and colorful style that takes the viewer on a journey. I hope you enjoy it.

Magazine SpreaD

The spreads above were created to display how the coffee process would be explored in a magazine format. In addition, I researched typefaces that represented each brewing process and the digital illustrations they were paired with. A selection of the copy from the magazine spreads can be read below under each graphic animation.

MOTION

• Main Title Sequence •

Just like coffee the main title sequence was created to bold and smooth. Taking a viewer on a journey into the coffee process. Each motion piece gives a glimpse into how each piece of the coffee process is carried out.

• Coffee Plant •

Not all coffee plants and their beans are grown equally. A bean that lends itself to this brewing experimentation is called an Arabica bean. This bean differs from its most popular relative, the Robusta bean. The Robusta bean's thicker surface allows for a wider range of flavors to be stored within the thick skin below.

• ROASTING •

The Arabica bean’s growth in a high altitude allows for it to be roasted at a variety of heat settings. Each of these potential settings bringing out their own special flavors Exploring these unique flavors within the coffee cherry begins after it is processed and roasted to perfection.

• COLD BREW •

Cold brew is by far the method that takes the longest to steep. Coarsely ground coffee beans are placed inside of a filter bag and placed into a bucket of water. The grounds are submersed in the water set to sit for twelve to twenty-four hours. Once the cold brew completes the brewing process, it is chilled for optimum flavor. It is commonly served over ice.

• The StORy •

Learning simple brewing methods such as these is the first step to diversely enhancing any coffee journey.

• COFFEE PRESS •

A coffee press brews coffee by steeping the grounds similar to loose leaf tea. Course grounds are placed into the base of the press and boiling water is added. When ground to the optimal coarseness, the coffee billows and avidly absorbs the water. This allows for a unique fullness of flavors that are unlike any other brewing method.

• ChemeX •

The Chemex brewing method is quite distinct. Coffee grounds are placed inside of a special cone filter and placed into a hand blown hourglass container. The Chemex’s unique shape allows of the coffee to develop sharp tastes and aromas.
